Recommended Reads
Check your local libraries for these informative reads or buy them to add to your personal library. What I’ve found works well for me are audiobooks. I have limited time to actually sit and read, but I love turning on an audiobook so I can educate myself while doing mundane things like washing the dishes.
Your Body in Balance by Neal Barnard
This book focuses on hormonal issues and how they are influenced by the food we eat. There are chapters about PCOS and endometriosis and hormonal cancers. A great and concise read!
How Not to Die by Michael Greger
If you’re only ever going to read one book about a whole foods plant-based diet, then THIS has got to be the one you read!
Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler
Although this book isn’t about veganism, it blew my mind how much I didn’t know about my female body before reading this book. There’s so much information in here about tracking your ovulation both when trying to conceive and to use the fertility awareness method (FAM) to avoid pregnancy. If you’re a woman, you should read this book!
Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis
I recommend this book because it has excellent chapters on veganism during pregnancy and on raising kids on a nutritious vegan diet.
The China Study by T. Colin Campbell
This book is an in-depth look at the multitude of health problems (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.) that can be improved by adopting a plant-based diet. This is a long and heavy read with tons and tons of study citations.
Proteinaholic by Garth Davis
An excellent read about how we have become addicted to protein–particularly animal proteins–and the health problems associated with that addiction.
Discovering the Word of Wisdom by Jane Birch
The fact that we are advised in the Word of Wisdom–a revelation given by God to Joseph Smith in 1833 instructing people how to live a healthy lifestyle–to “eat meat sparingly” or not at all “except in times of cold or famine” is all-too often overlooked. I love Jane’s more spiritual approach to eating a plant-based diet. God wants His children to be healthy and happy!
It Starts with the Egg by Rebecca Fett
A very informational read about egg quality and how to improve it. Although the dietary advise isn’t vegan, there’s still a lot of useful information in this book.
